# [[Do We Want a Life or a Career]]
#Career #Dystopia #Society #Values #Humanity
These days a person is mostly defined by his or her career, and the majority of our time is expected to be occupied by a "job" ..
When you imagine an average human adult's day, it's safe to assume that "work" along with everything that relates to it takes at least a 12 hour/day.
This is a very alien construct compared to how most humans have lived until a few decades ago.
"a job" has evolved from something we do on the side to sustain our life (family, friends, hobbies) to something that marginalized our life (family, friends, hobbies) to a couple of hours a day, if at all.
Even those who choose to let go of the classical "job" framework (freelancers, small businesses) .. it is very likely that their work consumes most of their time and attention, and marginalizes their family, friends, and hobbies.
It is very fair to argue that our world today is very financially demanding, and we won't survive unless we prioritize wok. I agree, 100%. But why did we (as a civilization) get here? What shuffled our values? What should we start doing today to get out of this trap over the next decades?
PS - Just so this is not misunderstood: I am not implying that people shouldn't work. I have previously written that [[Too Soon For An Effortless Civilization|we are not ready for an effortless civilization]]. However, I am critiquing the fact that we have somehow gotten ourselves into a world where we work to merely stay alive, while marginalizing our action life.
